MagnaDense concrete for Nuclear Decommissioning

LKAB Minerals supplies the nuclear decommissioning industry with MagnaDense, a high density naturally occurring mineral, manufactured from our own mines in Kiruna, Northern Sweden. Concrete constructions containing MagnaDense as a functional aggregate can achieve densities of up to 4.0 t/m3 and provide excellent shielding from harmful radiation and generated heat.

Using MagnaDense as an aggregate in concrete allows bunkers or containers to be built with slimmer walls, requiring less concrete and therefore reducing overall construction costs. These slimmer constructions have the same shielding properties as normal concrete constructions, enabling additional boxes to be placed in storage and making them easier to transport.

In addition, as MagnaDense is manufactured from the natural mineral magnetite, it will remain stable under long term storage conditions which for decommissioning projects is an important consideration.
