Iron Oxide

Iron oxide is a chemical compound made up of oxygen and iron, most abundant in the earth’s crust in the form of Hematite (Fe2O3). It also exists in the form of Magnetite (Fe3O4). Iron Oxide is a mineral which varies in colour, from black or silver-grey to brown, reddish brown or red. It is mined as the main ore of Iron.

LKAB Minerals sells iron oxide into different industries and with different (brand) names. When used outside the steel and foundry industry, Iron Oxide is also a commonly used word for hematite or magnetite products.   • Iron & Steel

    The most common application for Iron Oxide is in the production of Iron and Steel. The Iron Oxide is reduced to iron by heating it with carbon (coke) via a blast furnace. Our parent company LKAB based in Northern Sweden is the world's third largest producer and Europe's biggest producer of Iron Ore pellets for this application.   • Black steel moulds and casts

    Foundries

    Iron Oxide (or Hematite) is used as core sand additives to suppress the incidence of several sand/binder related defects such as nitrogen carbon pick up, finning/veining, pinholing and orange peel defect in shell moulding sands.

  • Coloured and clear glass bottles

    Colourants

    Iron Oxide (both hematite and magnetite) is used as a colourant in a range of applications including roof tiles, paints, flooring, ceramics and as a pigment in glass production.

  • Oil rig drilling

    Oil Drilling

    Iron Oxide (or Hematite) is used as a lubricant in oil field drilling. LKAB's drilling-grade material has been manufactured to the ISO 13500 Standard for the petroleum and natural gas industries.

For the foundry industry, LKAB Minerals offers Iron Oxide Type 8, Type 40 and Type 60 as well as blended products.
