MagnaDense concrete for nuclear decommissioning

Our customers in the nuclear-decommissioning industry utilise MagnaDense as an aggregate in high-density concrete. This dense concrete provides densities of up to 4 tonnes per cubic metre. Nuclear decommissioning projects benefiting from MagnaDense include bunkers and containers. These constructions require less concrete when using our high density mineral and therefore decreases overall costs.

Radiation protection with high-density concrete

MagnaDense concrete provides greater levels of radiation attenuation compared to conventional concrete. Also, you can use it to produce thinner sections in construction, or reduce dose rates with comparative thicknesses. The industry uses MagnaDense in the decommissioning of intermediate-level waste (ILW) with the highest amounts of radioactivity in this category. This also includes the decommissioning of reactor components. From experience, we know that concrete containers manufactured with MagnaDense remain stable under long term storage conditions. This is due to the natural properties of the material. In addition, it is approved for use by Sellafield and by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

In its 9th year, the event which is organised by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is an opportunity to meet companies and individuals involved in the industry. The event attracts around 1,700 delegates from around the world and houses more than 300 exhibitors.
