Our Finnish LKAB Minerals Oy location celebrated ten years of zero Lost Time Accidents (LTA's) at the Siilinjärvi Mica production site.
Since the last accident, in October 2007, many precautions have been taken to secure a healthy and safe working place. We have not wrapped each other in cotton wool but taken a hard look at how to improve.
Housekeeping for Safety First
When using the word "housekeeping", you often think about cleaning floors and surfaces, removing dust, and organizing clutter. But in our work setting, it means much more. Housekeeping is crucial to safe workplaces. It can help prevent injuries, improve productivity and morale, as well as make a good first impression on visitors. All our employees are encouraged and expected to participate in housekeeping, especially in terms of keeping their own work areas tidy, reporting safety hazards and cleaning up spills.
Ergonomic office environment
In an office setting most injuries are related to ergonomics. Most office personnel spend the bulk of their day seated at a desk and working on a computer. To prevent them from strains and other injuries related to posture and repetitive movement we use adjustable desks and chairs. Although ergonomic equipment might be slightly more expensive, the equipment is a wise investment and will prevent health-related issues.
Even though we have reached the ten-year milestone of zero LTA’s, there is always room for improvement. We keep track of near misses and determine how and why they occurred and take corrective action which can prevent similar – or more serious – incidents from happening in the future.
We are focused on doing the best we can and to remember the lessons learned. The knowledge from our best practice location in Finland is of course shared with all the other LKAB Minerals offices and plants around the world as Safety First is one of our company’s top priorities.
