A bentonite clay based coating will help to swell upon seeding when in contact with water.

Bentonite benefits in seed coating use

For the bentonite seed coating to be effective, the coating requires calcium bentonite as this will release the seed the moment it is wetted. The moisture will force the clay plates apart.
When necessary or required the bentonite can be coloured by the seed coating manufacturer.

Bentonite chemical and physical properties

LKAB Minerals offer a range of products with a varying Montmorillonite content dependent upon the end use. More information on the chemistry and physical properties of Bentonite products can be found by requesting a product definition from one of our sales managers via the contact form you will find at the bottom of this page.

Bentonite mineral origin

Bentonite is derived from volcanic ash and consists predominately of smectite minerals usually Montmorillonite. Bentonite is categorised as a sedimentary deposit containing >50% Montmorillonite which is volcanic in origin. Montmorillonite is a dioctahedral layer silicate and in sodium form swells when mixed with water to form dispersed colloid-size particles. There are two common types of Bentonite for commercial use; sodium (or swelling) Bentonite and calcium Bentonite.

Bentonite toxicology

Bentonite is non-toxic and inert. LKAB Minerals do not offer Bentonite for consumption in any form.
