LKAB Minerals mines and processes the natural mineral magnetite from which a very pure, dried and fine milled powder, is made. Owning the source and processing plant to make Magnetite ensures our customers with a long-term, reliable source of consistent quality material.

Our dried fine powdered Magnetite is ferri-magnetic, greyish-black in colour as well as thermally and electrically conductive.

Magnetite grades for use in foundry applications

Magnetite for foundry use is available in the several grades. Our products are under constant development. You are advised to contact the responsible sales manager to determine which grade will be most suitable for your production process.

The typical properties of Magnetite are:

Physical properties of Magnetite

Bulk density [t/m3]
2 - 4
Specific gravity [t/m3]
4.6 - 5.1

Chemical properties of Magnetite

Fe [%]
62.0 - 71.1
Fe3O4 [%]
86 - 99

Magnetite mineral origin

Mined from our group resources, we can ensure long-term availability and consistent quality of our Magnetite products. Kiruna and Malmberget, in the northern part of Sweden, are the places where our magnetite mines are located. The ore is mined and processed at the mine site and railed to one of the two ports – Luleå (Sweden) or Narvik (Norway). The ports are part of the LKAB Group logistics structure and operated year-round.

Magnetite toxicology

Magnetite for foundry applications is harmless to the environment, non-toxic in all its forms and for all practical purposes – inert. You can download the Safety Data Sheet on the right of this page.
