LKAB Minerals process and supply a range of refractory grade Bauxites. The majority of global bauxite ore is used in the production of aluminium metals. However, refractory bauxite is the ore calcined at 1600 - 1650°C which produces a dense, high purity, stable aggregate.

Grades of bauxite shown in waves on blue background

Refractory grade bauxites have a high alumina content and a very low alkali content with low impurities (iron oxide and titania specifically), ensuring stable temperature strength.

We offer different Bauxite products with the following general properties:

This consistent high quality grade of bauxite which has a standard density is produced in oil fired rotary kilns.

LKAB Minerals Rota-87 Bauxite is an extremely consistent premium grade bauxite produced using oil fired rotary kilns.

RASC Bauxite

RASC (refractory Aggregate Super Calcined) bauxite is rotary calcined. The bauxite raw material is extremely consistent which LKAB Minerals process into different gradings for use in the refractory industry or as an aggregate in High Friction Surfacing.

RG-82 Bauxite

LKAB Minerals RG Grey-82 Bauxite is a Chinese calcined bauxite with extremely consistent properties intended for use with hot or cold applied high friction surfacing systems.

Bauxite applications

  • Man standing in large refractory kiln

    Bauxite in refractory applications

Refractory grade bauxite has high refractoriness, good mechanical strength and moderate slag resistance. In the refractory industry, Bauxite is typically used in ladle working lining, tundish furniture, delta sections, general purpose repair, aluminium melting furnace and mineral processing.

  • Bauxite used in high friction surfacing

    Bauxite in High Friction Surfacing

LKAB Minerals supply a range of Chinese bauxites for use in High Friction Surfacing. Bauxite can be used in pedestrian pathways and road surfacing and can be hot or cold poured onto the road preparation surface. Our Bauxites are BBA and HAPAS type 1 approved. Read more about High Friction Surfacing here.

Bauxite standard grades

  • 5-8mm (-8+5mm)
  • 3-5mm (-5+3mm)
  • 1-3mm (-3+1mm)
  • 0-1mm (-1mm)
  • 0-250μm (-60#)
  • 0-150μm (-100#)
  • 0-15μm (-200#)

Our RG-82 material is available in the following High Friction Surfacing grades as standard:

  • -1.4+0.9mm
  • 3+1s

Other grades are available on request, please contact your representative for further information.

Bauxite packaging

Our Bauxite materials are available in 25kg paper sacks, 1000kg bulk bags or as bulk as standard.

The typical properties of Bauxite are:

Chemical properties of Bauxite grades

  Rota-87 Rota-85 RASC RG-82
Al2O3 [%] 87.5 85.9 89.7 84.1
SiO2 [%] 6.5 7.3 6.4 9.0
Fe2O3 [%] 1.9 1.9 0.7 2.0
TiO2 [%] 3.8 3.1 3.1 3.4

Bauxite origin

Our different Bauxite products have different origins:

  • Our Rota-87 and Rota-85 Bauxites originate from the Shanxi Province in China.
  • Our RASC Bauxite is sourced from Guyana in South America.
  • Our RG-82 Bauxite originates from China.

Bauxite toxicology

Bauxites are non-toxic, non-hazardous stable minerals. You can download the Safety Data Sheet in the section on the right hand side for further information.
