The European Spallation Source (ESS), built in Lund, Southern Sweden, has chosen MagnaDense to form part of its radiation shielding. LKAB Minerals provided the project with 14,000 tonnes of its high density natural mineral.
European Spallation Source
European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the most significant research and technology projects in the world. The facility is a so-called neutron source in which cascades of neutrons are induced through spallation. According to the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, ESFRI, ESS will be the world’s most powerful neutron source.
Protection that fits the type of radiation
There are various types of radiation. Each is needing a specific type of shielding. For the ESS project to get proper shielding it requires hydrogen-bearing minerals or multiple kinds of polymers along with high-density materials, such as heavy concrete.
MagnaDense chosen for easy handling
When designing the ESS, the engineers considered a number of alternatives and materials.
Bo Öhman, Sales Manager at LKAB Minerals in Sweden tells us, “From the beginning, the customer intended to use different aggregates. When engineers saw the benefits and simplicity of using MagnaDense, they modified the design to use our product in more parts of the construction. The concrete mix was adapted to reach a density of 3.5 t/m3. This mix is considerably heavier than normal concrete and very easy to obtain with MagnaDense. In addition to this, several safety requirements have become more stringent along the way. Therefore prompting changes in design, where I understood MagnaDense offered advantages.”
Safety First – Always
Ensuring complete shielding from radiation at ESS is a requirement from the Swedish Radiation Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten). The facility need to apply to get the permission to operate.
