In a recent building publication, the use of MagnaDense as an aggregate in concrete mixes for radiation shielding was featured.

When building radiation shielding bunkers in hospitals designers and architects experience lots of challenges. With normal concrete, the walls will be very thick which increases build area, and, therefore, costs. Another important aspect is the patient experience. The thicker the wall, the more unwelcoming it might feel which is a direct contradiction to what a designer is trying to create in healing environments.

Increase density with MagnaDense

LKAB Minerals offers a solution with an environmentally friendly magnetite material that increases density. This, in turn, enables that radiation shielding wall thickness can be significantly reduced; in this case from 2.6 meters to a mere 1.65 meters. Modern radiation treatment bunker

In the Swedish Building Magazine “Byggfakta” MagnaDense featured in a story about the top modern build of a radiation treatment bunker for the oncology clinic at the County Hospital in Kalmar. For this project, LKAB Minerals partnered with Swerock and HansaBygg.

They used MagnaDense aggregate in a heavy concrete mix, to be pumped at the construction site. Pumping is as easy as with normal mixes and MagnaDense is an approved aggregate by the standard EN12620.
