Our journey

With origins in iron ore mining in northern Sweden, LKAB has developed over more than a century into a global industrial group. LKAB Minerals has grown from this heritage, expanding into minerals, materials and engineered solutions that serve modern industry.

Today, we continue to build on this foundation through innovation, technical expertise, and long-term partnerships.

1890 – Foundation of LKAB

LuossavaaraKiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) was established in Sweden to extract and process iron ore from rich deposits in northern Sweden. Over time, the company grew into one of Europe’s largest iron ore producers, with operations still centred around Kiruna and Malmberget.

Early 1900s – Infrastructure expansion

Rail links from mining sites to ports were established, enabling efficient transport of ore for export and industrial use. This expansion helped LKAB scale rapidly and build international supply chains.

Mid 20th Century – Growth and modernisation

In the 1950s and 1960s, LKAB continued to develop underground mining operations and expand industrial capacity, reinforcing its position as a major global producer.

1976 – State ownership

The Swedish state became the sole owner of LKAB, aligning the company with national strategic interests in natural resources and industrial development.

1989 – LKAB Minerals founded

LKAB Minerals was established as a dedicated business unit to develop mineral products and applications outside of steelmaking. This included maximising resource efficiency from what is mined and creating products for industrial applications beyond iron ore.

1990s – 2000s – Portfolio growth

Initially focused on a small number of materials, LKAB Minerals expanded its portfolio to include around 30 different minerals, serving hundreds of applications from construction and coatings to agriculture and filtration.

2000s – Present – Global expansion

LKAB Minerals grew internationally, establishing operations and sales support in 12 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America.

2010s – 2020s – Environmental responsibility and innovation

Alongside product expansion, LKAB Minerals increased its focus on sustainable processing, circular economy principles, and the use of secondary and recycled mineral streams. Today, approximately 45% of LKAB Minerals’ sales come from secondary products, underlining a long-term commitment to resource efficiency.
