LKAB Minerals’ charity abseil raises nearly £5,000 for Alzheimer’s Society
On Sunday, 8th June 2025, 25 employees from LKAB Minerals took on an abseiling challenge to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. We were also joined by 10 colleagues from Scunthorpe Rugby Club for the event, which took place at our facilities in Scunthorpe. Participants trekked 225 steps to the top of our 115ft silo before taking on the abseil.

Almost £5,000 has been raised so far—supporting the Alzheimer’s Society’s vital work to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.
Steve Handscomb, Managing Director UK, said:
“We’re incredibly proud of our team for stepping out of their comfort zones to support such an important cause. Alzheimer’s Society does life-changing work, and this event is our way of giving back while raising awareness. The response so far has been amazing, and we’re hugely grateful to everyone who took part or donated.”
Adding to the community spirit, members of Scunthorpe Rugby Club also took part to help fundraise and raise awareness.
Karen Locking, Communication and Partnership Manager for Scunthorpe Rugby Club, shared:
“When we heard about the abseil, we knew we wanted to get involved – dementia affects so many families. Teaming up with LKAB Minerals, who are also our main club sponsors, is a great way to show what local organisations can achieve when we work together.”

For some participants, the abseil wasn’t just a physical challenge, but a test of nerves. A number of participants admitted to being uneasy with heights, making the 35-metre descent even more nerve-wracking.
“I’ve always been terrified of heights, so standing at the top of the silo was definitely out of my comfort zone,” said Nikki Whitfield, LKAB Minerals. “But knowing it was for such an important cause gave me the push I needed. The support from everyone on the day was amazing—I’m really proud I went through with it.”
The Alzheimer’s Society provides crucial care and support, funds life-changing research, and campaigns for the rights of people living with dementia. With dementia cases continuing to rise, every pound raised truly makes a difference.
