LKAB Minerals launches low-carbon and laitance-free floor screed to meet new environmental and performance standards
Gypsol ZL cuts installation costs by 66%, lowers embodied carbon by 88% and supports compliance with schemes including the Future Homes Standard and BREEAM
LKAB Minerals has launched Gypsol Zero Laitance (ZL), a new low-carbon liquid floor screed that eliminates sanding, accelerates project delivery and helps developers meet the rising bar for sustainable construction. Suitable for both commercial and residential developments, it provides a durable, low-carbon foundation for a wide range of flooring applications.
As regulations tighten, schemes including the Future Homes Standard (FHS), BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) are placing greater emphasis on the embodied carbon and energy performance of building materials – floors included.
Traditional screeds are typically cement-based, contributing heavily to the sector’s carbon footprint through energy-intensive cement production. Globally, cement manufacturing accounts for around 8% of CO₂ emissions, underlining the urgent need for low-carbon alternatives.
Using a natural anhydrite binder instead of cement, Gypsol ZL reduces embodied carbon by 88% compared with conventional screeds. Its zero-laitance formula eliminates the sanding stage entirely, saving labour and speeding up delivery. With a thinner pour depth and faster drying profile, it also minimises material use and site disruption – cutting total installation costs by up to 66%.
