Bentonite is derived from volcanic ash and consists predominately of smectite minerals, usually Montmorillonite. We categorise this product as a sedimentary deposit containing >50% Montmorillonite which is volcanic in origin. Montmorillonite is a dioctahedral layer silicate, and in sodium form swells when mixed with water to form dispersed colloid-size particles.
There are two common types of Bentonite for commercial use; sodium (or swelling) Bentonite and calcium Bentonite.
Bentonite is non-toxic and inert. LKAB Minerals do not offer this product for consumption in any form.
