We supply platy minerals and iron oxides to different brake pad manufacturers worldwide.
Phlogopite Mica in brake pads
Phlogopite Mica can be one of the mineral fillers used to make brake pads. Its platy structure and high thermal resistance make it very suitable for decreasing the difference between the static and the dynamic coefficient of friction. Alternative platy minerals, such as graphite, provide the same properties. However, Phlogopite Mica delivers consistent performance even under changes in pressure and temperature.
Health and safety benefits of MicaFort
MicaFort grades offer significant health and safety advantages over alternative platy minerals. It is primarily due to the significantly low levels of free Silica. Low amounts of free Silica is an essential metric measured by the producers we work with, especially when using a dry mixing method, as the inhalation of free Silica can cause serious health problems.
In summary, the technical benefits provided by MicaFort are:
- high thermal resistance
- a similar static and dynamic friction coefficients
- very stable behaviour despite pressure and temperature changes
- very low crystalline Silica <0.1%
MagniF, fine-ground magnetite, used in brake pads
Another LKAB Minerals’ mineral the industry uses in brake pads is MagniF. This mineral is a specially manufactured fine-ground magnetite (iron oxide). Beyond MicaFort, MagniF is one of the components which homogenises the friction coefficient and heat transfer from the pad to the brake disc. The primary use of MagniF is its abrasiveness.
