Product information

Standard grades of Magnetite

Our Magnetite is available in coarse and fine grades as well as mixtures of these grades. We also have fine Dried Magnetite available.

Each grade has a controlled particle size distribution.  We design our grades in such a way that we ensure this natural mineral fits your application.

LKAB Minerals is part of the LKAB Group. We have offices around the world as well as dedicated Sales Managers. Most locations have storage facilities allowing for efficient, on-time and economical supply.

Magnetite for Heat storage

Our customers use our natural iron oxide mineral because it can store heat very well. They have been mixing our Magnetite for over 30 years in heat blocks in Night Storage Heaters.

If you are looking for a larger storage opportunity for thermal heat, Magnetite is a sustainable solution. Facts about our natural mineral that confirm its potential for upscaling heat storage are clear:

  • Abundant Availability
  • Relatively cheap
  • Chemically Stable
  • High Thermal Heat Resistance.
  • Non Flammable
  • High Heat Capacity per Volume (~3.4 J/cm 3 *K).

Magnetite grades for use in foundry applications

Do you want to prevent surface defects in the casted metals made in foundries? Then our product grades for foundry are your solution. We have this product available in several grades.

LKAB Minerals mines and processes the natural mineral magnetite from which a pure, dried and fine milled powder is made. Owning the source and processing plant ensures our customers a long-term, reliable source of consistent quality material.

Our dried fine powdered iron oxide is ferri-magnetic, greyish-black in colour, and thermally and electrically conductive.

Iron catalysts based on Magnetite

The third use for our iron oxide is as an iron source for iron catalysts which are used to improve or increase the rate of reaction in chemical processes. Because of its high iron content, the LKAB Minerals product is an ideal solution.

Mineral information

The typical properties of Magnetite are:

Physical properties of Magnetite

Bulk Density [t/m3]2-4
Specific Gravity [t/m3]4.6 – 5.1

Chemical properties of Magnetite

Fe [%]62.0 – 71.1
Fe3O4 [%]86 – 99

Magnetite mineral origin

Mined from our group resources, we can ensure our products’ long-term availability and consistent quality. Kiruna and Malmberget, in the northern part of Sweden, are the places where our magnetite mines are located. The ore is mined and processed at the mine site and railed to one of the two ports – Luleå (Sweden) or Narvik (Norway). The ports are part of the LKAB Group logistics structure and are operated year-round.

Toxicology

Magnetite for foundry applications is harmless to the environment, non-toxic in all its forms and, for all practical purposes – inert.
